According to the website of the Spanish newspaper El Pais, one or more Padel tennis courts can be found almost anywhere in Spain within a 10-kilometer radius. Finding a free venue temporarily can be an adventure.
There’s no denying that Padel tennis has become a fashionable sport in Spain, and the data backs that up. The sport was the fastest growing sport in Spain between 2016-2019, even surpassing tennis, which has grown by around 283% over the past 10 years, according to the Spanish Supreme Council of Sport (CSD). Post-pandemic figures have not been made public, but judging by the active participation in the movement in recent months, the growth momentum will continue.
Spain is the birthplace of professional Padel tennis, driven by the world-leading professional Padel tennis tournament (WPT). 14 of the 19 most important tournaments to be played in the 2021 season are in Spain, where athletes from all over the world come to try their hand at Padel tennis.
Many experts agree that the sport has a bright future for the next few years. Analyst Javier Concepcion said: “In the future, more Padel tennis players will be able to make a living from this burgeoning sport. The sport is growing at a very high rate. The WPT is the driving force behind the project. It took a lot of effort to develop, and I think it’s getting bit by bit towards the goals that were set a few years ago.”
